Celebrating Translators in National Translation Month

September is National Translation Month, and we here at TLC are excited to celebrate all the translators we work with. We’d like to take a moment to think about all the wonderful ways translators have impacted the world.

For starters, translators are great for the global economy and business purposes. They support trade between different countries, and businesses can target other locales to try to attract customers in their mother tongue.

Increased cultural communication is another great reason to celebrate translators. Translating works of art is important for cultural enrichment. Many movies, books, and other media have made an impact in various countries which, without a translator, would have been impossible. Translation also holds an important part of religion. For example, the Bible has been translated into more than 500 languages.

Translators also help with scientific research and technological advances. Life science translation helps to save lives every day. With translation, research can be handed from one country to another to help further it along. Technological advancements also make our lives easier. Many accessibility aids were invented overseas and had to be localized to other languages. Not to mention how technological advances make our lives more entertaining!

Most wouldn’t think translators have any importance in the legal system, but they are essential. They translate reports, depositions, testimonies, and other courtroom materials to help the legal system stay fair and balanced. Translators and interpreters ensure everyone is treated fairly in the legal system regardless of the language they speak.

Perhaps most importantly, translators contribute to world peace. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights holds the record as the most translated document. It’s been translated into over 500 languages. In May of 2017, the United Nations acknowledged that translators bring nations together. Translators have always celebrated September 30, the Feast Day of their Patron Saint and rebel-translator of biblical times, St. Jerome, as their Day. But it was UN Declaration 71/288 that deemed September 30th International Translation Day. They even held a translation contest to celebrate multilingualism and highlight the role that translators have in diplomacy.

Translators are vital to the world in so many ways. High quality translators can sometimes be hard to find, so partnering with a language service provider with expertise and ongoing relationships with translators is essential.
